Finding the Right Bra For You

Are you wearing the right bra size?

An average of 8 in 10 women wear the wrong bra size - you may be one of them. Why? Your body changes over time and your fit will change year to year as you lose or gain weight, exercise more or less, and so on. If your bra is uncomfortable, if you're experiencing spillage over your cups or back strap, tight straps, or a gap between your cups, you are most likely wearing the wrong size.

Helpful Hints:

1. It should feel good. A great fitting bra shouldn't dig, pull, poke, or otherwise cause discomfort. If it does, it's not the right bra (or size) for you. Make sure you are comfortable in your bra when you sit and move around.

2. Don't settle for wrinkles. If you see extra fabric or wrinkly, baggy cups, the cup size is too big. Try a cup size down.

3. You shouldn't fall out. There shouldn't be any breast tissue spillage, puddling, or falling out of the bottom of the cups. If there is your cup size is too small. Try a larger cup size, for a more flattering, more natural look.

4. Your straps shouldn't do all the work. Your bra's support comes from the band, not the straps. So, that is why it is key that you wear the correct band size. Take a look in the mirror, from the side, your band should be at the same level all the way around. If it rides up in the back, it is most likely too big a band. Try going down a band size or tightening your band.

5. Front and center. The center front of your bra should lie flat against your breastbone. It should not lie on top of any breast tissue. If you see a large gap, you may need to go up to a larger cup size.

6. Right not tight. How tight is right?? Your band should feel firm and secure. You can check by slipping two fingers beneath the band in the back, and one in the center in the front. If you can't easily do this, you may need to loosen your band a bit, or try a larger band size.

7. Bras stretch. Bras stretch over time, make sure you are wearing your bra on the loosest hook. Your bra will stretch with washing and wear, so when buying a new bra, try it on the loosest hook, so you can tighten it as needed.

8. Underwires shouldn't be painful. The underwire in your bra should lie flat at the front of your bra, against your ribcage. The underwire should not dig into breast tissue. If it seems uncomfortable, try a larger cup size or a different style.

Reminder:
Finding the perfect bra takes time and patience, sometimes you will have to go up a cup size or two, but don't let that discouraged you-sizes vary among brands. Check back every six months or so. It's a good idea to re-evaluate your bras regularly to make sure they are fitting you correctly. A women's body changes over time, and bras stretch and lose shape with repeated wear and washing.
